How to Play Pokemon Unite

Pokemon Unite is a 5v5 strategic team battle game composed of your favorite Pocket Monsters. In this game, you have to team up with other players to take down the opposition. In Pokemon Unite Battle, unlike other MOBAs whose main goal is to destroy the opponent’s base alone, trainers face off to see who can score the most points within the allotted time.

The game is cross-platform so trainers who use Android and IOS can play against those who use Nintendo Switch. You can also use the account from your Nintendo Switch and use it on your phone and vice versa so you don’t need to have multiple accounts for both devices.

Gameplay

The main objective of the game is to collect points by collecting Aeos Energy from wild Pokemon and defeating other players and placing them on the enemy team’s goal zones. The team with the most points at the end of the allotted time (10 minutes) wins. You can either play Standard, Quick Match, or Ranked Match if you want to climb up in the leaderboards.

But don’t worry, it’s not just about collecting Aeos Energy and earning points. There will also be the leveling system, skills, and the usual clashes/fights within the map so it won’t be easy as it looks.

When your knock out an enemy Pokemon, they may drop Aeos Energy and you can get them for yourself. On the other hand, it also means that opponents may also pick up your hard-earned Aeos energy if they knock you out too.

There are also Wild Monsters on the map that can give you stat bonuses when you take them down. Team up with your teammates as these bonuses can turn the tides of the battle.

  • Ludicolo – Gives you a purple aura that will deal more damage to Pokemon with low remaining HP
  • Bouffalanat – Gives you orange Aura. Attacks by Pokemon who has this aura can decrease the movement speed of the enemies for a short time
  • Rotom – When you defeat Rotom and it reaches an opposing goal zone, your team gains 20 points. The goal zone will also become defenseless for a short amount of time and your team’s goal-scoring speed is increased.
  • Drednawl – Gives you a shield for a short time
  • Zapdos – Defeating Zapdos will make all opposing goals defenseless

Leveling and Evolution

Just like any other MOBA game, the Pokemon that you choose for battle starts at level 1 will also level up as you defeat wild Pokemon and other players on the map. Each Pokemon evolves at different levels. The most exciting part is when you reach a certain level, your Pokemon will also evolve, so you won’t be stuck playing Charmander for the rest of the match.

For example, Charmander evolves into Charmeleon when it reaches level 5 and into Charizard when it reaches level 9. Some Pokemon, like Gible, will evolve into Gabite at level 6 and into Garchomp at level 10. But not all Pokemon will evolve and one example would be Absol.

Skills

As you level up your Pokemon, you will be able to level up and unlock new skills. What makes Pokemon Unite unique from other MOBAs is you won’t be getting static and fixed skills for every Pokemon. You can choose what type of skill you want to level for every S1, S2, S3. So every game is different from any other, depending on how you want to play your favorite Pokemon.

Let’s take Charizard as an example. You can upgrade his 1st skill Flame Burst into Flamethrower (Range) or Fire Punch (Melee). You can also upgrade his 2nd skill Fire Spin into Fire Blast (Range) or Flare Blitz (Dash). There is a lot of paths that you can take for this Pokemon. You can go either full range, full melee, or hybrid.

Pokemon

Pokemon in this game also have their different roles and specialties; All Rounder, Supporter, Attacker, Defender, and Speedster. Like other MOBAs, team composition is crucial to winning matches, especially on ranked games.

Take note that not all Pokemon are available for playing. You need to buy them in the game or in this case a Unite license for each Pokemon you want to use. Unite license can be bought in the Unite Battle Committee.

But don’t worry as there would be a free rotation schedule where a set of Pokemon can be played even without purchasing their Unite License.

Items

Even though there are is item purchasing in between matches, you can give your Pokemon Held items and Battle Items that can help then every battle.

Held items give your Pokemon additional abilities stats such as HP, attack, and many more. Some of the Held items that you are familiar with in the classic Pokemon titles are available in the game:

  • Leftovers
  • Muscle Band
  • Scope Lens
  • Shell Bell
  • etc.

Battle Items can be used in battle and have a cooldown between uses. You can change your battle item by opening the Battle Prep menu on the Pokemon selection screen before a battle. You cannot change your battle item during a battle. Some of the Battle items that you are familiar with in the classic Pokemon titles are available in the game:

  • Potion
  • X Attack
  • X Speed
  • Fluffy Tail
  • Eject Button

Battle Pass

Battle pass allows you to complete battle pass missions during a season to raise your battle pass level and receive rewards based on that level. Missions are reset every Monday at 00:00 UTC and it will end the missions from the previous week. But don’t worry as you can still claim the rewards for the completed missions.

Once you reach the maximum Battle Pass level, you can receive a battle pass prize box each time you earn a set number of battle pass points.
